In Photography

Photo art can mean several things: it can mean making prints purely for their artistic content, as opposed to their content as documentation such as news, or portraiture, etc. It can mean ultra-careful and creative printing to satisify the most exacting demands and taste, using a variety of techniques. Photography can be decorative or utilitarian.
Featured Artists
  Ansel Adams
Adams is one of the most well known photographers in America and was a commercial photographer for 30 years. He made visionary photos of Western landscapes that were inspired by a family vacation to Yosemite National Park when he was a young boy. Adams wanted his work to be seen by many, not just the few who could afford to buy his work. His photographs pose as a guide to the beauty of our country's landscapes, both past, present, and what we must not lose in the future.
  James Blakeway
One of the world's premier skyline photographers, Blakeway's makes it his business to get the shot nobody else dares. His panoramic pictures are just as impressive as the unconventional ways he goes about getting the shot he desires. He has hung from a helicopter and been suspended 800 feet in the air from a crane. The result of his aerobic exploits is an impressive collection of more that 120 panoramic lithographs of U.S. and world cities, historic landmarks and golf courses. Hang one of his panoramic photos of your home city and won't feel so far away.
  Imogen Cunningham
Cunningham began to take photographs in 1901 while she was a student at the University of Washington. For years she worked on assignments for magazines, conducted a portrait studio, and even taught at the California School of Fine Arts. She had made her living as a portrait photographer, and she had also photographed people just for fun. She once stated a philosophy which has guided her ever since: "One must be able to gain an understanding at short notice and close range of the beauties of character, intellect, and spirit so as to be able to draw out the best qualities and make them show in the outer aspect of the sitter. To do this one must not have a too pronounced notion of what constitutes beauty in the external and, above all, must not worship it. To worship beauty for its own sake is narrow, and one surely cannot derive from it that esthetic pleasure which comes from finding beauty in the commonest things."
  Hulton/Getty
The Hulton Getty Picture Collection is perhaps the world's greatest library of illustrative material. Hulton Getty became organized along commercial lines in 1947. Between 1958 and 1988 the Hulton was part of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), during which time major press archives from the Daily Express and the London Evening Standard were acquired. There are now over 18 million images in Hulton Getty, which is actually made up of over three hundred separate collections. The archive begins with illustrations and engravings from the 14th century although its major strengths lie in its unparalleled collection from the years of 1840 through 1985. Hulton Getty is actually made up of over three hundred separate collections and is one of the greatest resources of evocative original imagery in the world. The archive begins with illustrations and engravings from the 14th century. Hulton Getty captures real people, real moments, and real life.
  Jim Brandenburg
Renowned National Geographic photographer Jim Brandenburg is considered one of the premier wildlife photographers in the world. However, this Minnesota-based artist doesn't measure his success all of the national and international awards and honors he has received. Rather, he gains satisfaction from his long-term commitment to his quest to explore and understand the wilderness. As he says, "Ever since I was a boy, I have had a passion for telling stories about the forest and the prairies." Brandenburg took his first photograph at age fourteen, and ever since then, the force that continues to fuel Brandenburg's photography is his ever-deepening fascination with the wolf. Brandenburg speaks of the "elusive" nature of wolves, and the challenge that creates in photographing them.
