In Impressionism

The impressionist style of painting is characterized chiefly by concentration on the general impression produced by a scene or object and the use of unmixed primary colors and small strokes to simulate actual reflected light.
Featured Artists
  Mary Cassat
Cassat was unique because she was a woman who succeeded in a predominantly male profession. Born in Pennsylvania, she spent most of her time in France living and painting there. Her delicate paintings mostly show women either bathing or holding babies and small children.
  Paul Cezanne
Czanne's paintings may look old fashioned, but they still maintain fresh and stimulating to the youth of today. His choice of color, modeling, structure, touch, and expression, all executed with uninterpreted strokes, show his exquisite taste.
  Edgar Degas
Degas studied the movements and all the qualities of the body in motion. He was so preoccupied with movement that he would sit near streets just to watch pedestrians and the patterns of their motion.
  Paul Gauguin
Degas studied the movements and all the qualities of the body in motion. He was so preoccupied with movement that he would sit near streets just to watch pedestrians and the patterns of their motion.
  Henri Matisse
Matisse had a special gift for combining colors in unexpected ways. His mature style of painting created harmony and unity in his work. Matisse sought to soothe the mind and emotions of viewers in the midst of a troubling world.
  Claude Monet
Monet, one of the greatest of the Impressionist painters, had a unique relationship with color. He called his color his "day-long obsession" and his "joy and torment". He mostly painted gardens, cloudy skies, rivers with sailboats, seaside resorts, and rocky coasts. To him, these were not things, but color aggregates that have to be perceived, their relationships understood, and then recreated by the artist's brush. His work adds a serene and beautiful touch to any room.
